Most people think brushing their teeth and chewing gum are the only two ways to avoid bad breath, but there are a few more ways to avoid the plague that is bad breath.
- Brush your teeth properly
- Use a soft bristled brush and replace it every 3-4 months
- Brush right before you eat and 1 hour afterwards
- Brush your tongue
- Floss
- Flossing removes plaque and bacteria build-up from between your teeth that toothbrushes don’t always catch. Floss at least once a day.
- Avoid certain foods such as:
- Sugary foods and drinks
- Acidic drinks
- Coffee and alcohol
- Eat certain foods like:
- Sugar-free yogurt. Yogurt with good bacteria prevents bad breath by reducing the level of bad breath causing sulfide compounds
- Stock up on Vitamin-D rich foods like salmon, orange juice, or eggs, since Vitamin-D helps reduces bad breath
- Various herbs and spices are linked to reducing bad breath as well. Try adding cloves, anise, or fennel seeds to your diet.
- Don’t smoke or chew tobacco
- A tobacco habit can also lead to gum disease, which causes bad breath among other things
- Get regular dental check-ups
- If you have a lot of bad breath issues and you are following a strict healthy mouth regime, then you should definitely see your dentist
- Drink lots of water
- Dry mouth can cause terrible bad breath, so be sure to keep hydrated.
- Chew sugar-free gum or mints
- Make sure they are sugar-free, because sugars can help feed bacteria, which will make bad breath even worse.
- Use mouthwash
- Antiseptic mouthwash will kill the bad bacteria. Look for mouthwashes with hlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, chloride dioxide, zinc chloride, and triclosan.
