Celebration Of The Sacred Cattle

Daniel Naudé is a talented photographer, who was born in 1984 in Cape Town, South Africa. He received his BA in graphic design and visual studies at the University of Stellenbosch. For his series “Sightings Of The Sacred”, Daniel has traveled the world taking majestic photographs of cattle, which are considered as sacred in several countries, such as India, Uganda and Madagascar.

In many respects, this tradition faded in the 20th century because there were very few lands and creatures left to classify as the world had been mapped and the animals of the world named. The heightened presence of the animals in his images allows us to experience the awe and wonder that accompanied the reception of images and reports of exotic animals when they reached Europe in previous centuries.

In each of Naudé formal compositions, the animals stare at the view with a disquieting conscience, a reminder to question our presumptions about humanity’s dominion over the animal world.
