The Tianjin Binhai Library

Designed by the Dutch company MVRDV, the extraordinary library in Tianjin, China, is nearing completion. The 34,200 m2 building is part of the new Binhai Cultural Centre, which was designed by German architects GMP, and connects four other buildings through a series of cultural corridors.

The library is surrounded by a mirrored spherical auditorium, which forms an eye that gives a wonderful view across the park located in front of the building. Terraced bookshelves echo the area throughout the atrium, leading visitors into the heart of the library. MVRDV have designed Tianjin Binhai Library to supply a cultural district for the city. The building acts both as an education centre and as a connector from the park into the cultural district. The project is expected to be open to the public in mid-2017.
