During the last decades, religious practice in Western countries radically decreased. Therefore, many religious places have been abandoned. Particularly in England, only 30% of the population is concerned with religion while the mass participation rate is only 1%. Photographer James Kerwin therefore tried to catch the mystical ambiance of empty and dilapidated churches, where a feeling of spirituality seems to persist.

There is something mystic in the peeling paint…so heavy after soaking up all those hymns, prayers, hopes and dreams. The wood/plaster work is always striking in these old places.
How amazing. I’d heard there have been people who’ve bought some smaller churches and repurposed them into homes.
Wow, its incredible how christianity is dying a slow death. Some churches have been converted into mosques, as its the fastest growing religon.
