For several decades, Yves Rossy wanted to fly like a bird, with minimal equipment, but with the ability to direct himself in space. After the originals, skysurf (1993-1998), wingsuit and inflatable fins (1999-2003), had the idea to power the blades jet engines!. The German company Jet-Cat has supplied engines originally attached to inflatable fins. This method failed because of insufficient stiffness. In 2004, Yves Rossy makes a rigid, deployable, 3m-span wing of carbon. The first few days were difficult, but the project was promising. The pilot worked for the improvement of system development and aerodynamic blade tip to improve stability. In 2005, he completed two successful flights each wing fitted with a jet engine. After much time and hard work added two additional jet engines that were necessary for the blades to achieve the required level of performance and safety. This prototype with 4 jet engines, guided only by body movements and allows for a steady flight. This flight was in November 2006, a dream that lasts 5 minutes and 40 seconds.Since then, Yves Rossy continuously trained to optimize fins. Has increased the breadth of the wing, to fly over the English Channel from Calais (France) to Dover (UK) in September 2008.Yves now is working on a new prototype, smaller and more powerful fins, which will allow him taking off from the ground, and more freedom for stunts!
